fortunes were improved financially. he was fed last night at the home of george clooney. he hosted a fund-raiser which pulled in a reportedly $15 million. the president will leave los angeles to head to reno, nevada. there he's expected to deliver a speech urging congress to push through morning refinancing legislation. mitt romney isn't apologizing for what he calls stupid pranks he pulled in high school. "the washington post" reported romney and several high school classmates held down a boy they perceived to be gay and clipped his longish dyed blond hair with scissors. romney says he doesn't remember the specific incident but apologized for any pranks that may have gone too far. american forces are going after the terror group which tried and failed to bomb an american-bound airliner this week. the plot failed because the saudi intelligence officer

infiltrated that group. >> we have more on the information he provided. >> reporter: the u.s. launched air strikes in yemen thursday killing as many as seven militants was the second attack against al qaeda in the arabia peninsula in less than a week. last weekend a drone attack killed a key commander for the group. he was also wanted for the bombing of the u.s.s. cole if 2000. the air strikes are the latest blow totter i.r.s. group. earlier this week the c.i.a. and foreign intelligence agencies foiled the plot to bomb an airliner. >> this was one of the most sophisticated intelligence operations we've ever run. we were having access to extremely vital information. >> reporter: but the operation was nearly blown when someone leaked information about it to the associated press forcing

agents to wrap it up ahead of schedule. senator joseph lieberman, chairman of the homeland security committee says he believes the leak interrupted parts of the operation that were not yet completed. >> they did something really harmful to our national security and i hope we catch them. >> reporter: defense secretary leon panetta not only hurt this operation but could make it harder to recruit future informants. >> to do it effectively, you have to protect these people. >> reporter: experts say the double agent is probably in hiding with a new identity. >> the associated press held off reporting about the bomb plot until officials at the white house gave assurances the operation was over. >> reporter: 28 people are now facing federal drug charges after a major drug bust in northern virginia. the f.b.i. says the suspects are all part of a large cocaine trafficking ring from honduras. the coke was being smuggled into dulles international airport and other airports

around the country, and it was being packaged inside wooden picture frames and other tourist type gifts. the man convicted of killing an off-duty maryland straight trooper will spend the rest of his life in jail. cyril williams was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 25 years. williams shot and killed maryland state trooper wesley brown after brown tossed him out of an appleby's restaurant in forrestville. brown was off duty working security at the restaurant at the time. the younger brother of two n.f.l. players is charged in the murder of a denver man. 19-year-old michael davis is accused in a series of hammer attacks in the district. one of the victims was found dead in the petworth neighborhood april 24. the suspect is the brother of san francisco 49er tight end brandon davis and mb vontae davis. a howard county man is now in jail facing drug charges after half a million dollars

worth of marijuana was found inside his home in laurel. investigators found a massive growing operation in the basement, 341 plants, and sophisticated equipment. the suspect's suspect -- the suspect lives in northboro in howard county. the soul survivor of a fiery crash in chevy chase is suing the people who helped to save his life. an 18-year-old was a passenger in a stolen car with three other people. his lawyers say the dee tails of the crash is different than what the police say what happened. >> this was not a life or death matter until the police made it so. >> you see the fiery crash right there. montgomery county police say the officers didn't touch the car. they say the driver crashed into a tree in chevy chase

circle all on his own. 4:36. the mississippi man accused of killing two people and kidnapping two others is dead. the f.b.i. says 35-year-old adam mayes shot and killed himself as s.w.a.t. team members moved in. they believe mayes called joanne bain and her 14-year-old and then kidnapped her two younger daughters. authorities say the missing girls are safe and appear to be unharmed. it's the defense team's turn now in the john edwards campaign finance trial. prosecutors finished their job, 14 days of dramatic and painful testimony. they did that yesterday. edwards is charged with using campaign funds to hide his affair with rielle hunter. redskins great art monk filed a suit joining 63 others who claim the n.f.l. and helmet manufacturer rydell

huge loss. it lost at least $2 billion. these were a series of bad trades that were supposed to help the bank hedge itself against other investments in a difficult economy. jamie diamond blames the losses on, quote, many errors, sloppiness, and bad judgment. traders are wondering what does jpmorgan's problems mean for other banks. the they're sending the stocks lower on that uncertainty. shares tumbled more than 6% in after hours trading while other banks took a 2% haircut. asian markets have seen red arrows and the dow barely snaps a 60 -- rather 20 points standing this morning at 12,855. the nasdaq dipped by a point but the s&p 500 was better by 3. in the meantime gasoline prices have dropped 5% since peaking last month. the national average is $3.74 a gallon. some good news here, down 20

cents. drivers are paying 21 cents less than this time last year. experts are predicting if crude oil prices continue to fall, gas could average $3.50 a gallon by memorial day. >> wouldn't that be nice. >> it would be nice. >> research is suggesting a large number of americans are not investing and it's not because they don't want to. it has more to do with not being able to afford it. a trade association for the financial services industry limra says 46% of americans are not contributing to a 401(k) or an ira plan. the number highest of course among those 18 to 34. that percentage jumped to 56%. this is interesting. a new ap poll is out. it shows 88% of us think this is a good time to save. that is down a touch from february. i'm going to hand you the microphone back. >> we're sharing, a team effort here. >> that's what we're like here. >> we can go wider now. >> hi, guys. >> wow. >> we're all about the

van ness and dupont circle stations. on the orange line between the eastern market and cheverly stations and the blue line work will be between eastern market and addison road. back to you. it's been nine months since an earthquake damaged thomas jefferson in virginia. it will close today. the plan is to demolish the school and eventually build a new one. the federal government plans to provide more than $3 million for the new building. total cost, however, is going to be $13.5 million. a food and drug administration panel is recommending the agency approve the first drug to prevent h.i.v. in healthy people. >> we have more from los angeles. >> reporter: research shows the drug truvada can prevent the spread of h.i.v. in high risk people. the pill cut the risk of infection by over 90% in gay men who took it daily. >> i think we are in an era now for the first time when we can foresee the end of the aids

epidemic. >> reporter: truvada is already approved to treat people infected with h.i.v. it's a combination of two older drugs. h.i.v. patients on truvada are far less likely to develop aids and their symptoms are reduced. every year a,000 people in the -- year 50,000 people in the u.s. are infected with h.i.v. that's been the trend for the past two decades. some groups are concerned using truvada for prevention would cause more h.i.v. cases. michael wine seen, president of the aids foundation fear it is could lead to riskier behavior. >> if people are told just pop a pill and that's the solution, it can be very difficult to get people to use condoms. >> reporter: studies show truvada needs to be taken daily to be effective. many worry young healthy people wouldn't take the pill as recommended. >> we need to get to a point where everyone is using at least one and ideally two different ways of preventing the spread of h.i.v. >> reporter: and health care providers also raised concerns

about truvada's price tag. it costs about $900 a month. cbs news, los angeles. >> wow. the fda doesn't have to follow the advice of this package but it usually does. -- panel but it usually does. there's more evidence nonoral contraceptives can increase the risk for blood clots for women. those who use the skin patch were eight times more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis. nonoral contra secttives continuously release hormones into the body to prevent pregnancy. two new studies show young adults are still getting sunburn and they're still using tanning beds. a cdc study found half of adults younger than 30 were sunburned in the past year even though many are using sunscreen and staying in the shade more. a national cancer institute study found indoor tanning is still common among young
